Tihany 11-20 July 2014 > contemporary art festival and fair

Artplacc

In August, 2013 ARTplacc Contemporary Art Festival will be organized for the third time near lake Balaton, in the wonderful setting of the Tihany peninsula.

The mentioning of Tihany and lake Balaton evokes pleasant memories in our minds. The festival aims to build on the region’s cultural and social reminiscence by going beyond touristic clichés while acheiving a breakthrough in the area’s cultural life and restoring the former glory of the village. A village, that bears the opportunity in itself to become the contemporary cultural hub of the Northern shore of lake Balaton. We feel, that with enduring work, the festival will contribute to the image of Tihany and become a professional platform of the contemporary arts.

Art and cultural mediation constantly renews itself – therefore the development of new strategies and methods are vital for making culture accessible for a wider audience. ARTplacc made its debut in the summer of 2011 with a clear motivation of repositioning contemporary art and making it accessible for the broad public by presenting it in a sometimes unconventional, less formal setting.  We hope, that the unbound ambiance of a summer festival can be a delectable recreational experience for an audience a bit cramped by classical, more regulated museum spaces but still open for culture. This year we put a special emphasis on mediation: the festival will be rich in interactive installations, educational programmes, guided tours, talks and discussions.

The focal venue of ARTplacc is the Central Exhibition Tent (CET) where artworks by the leading Hungarian and CEE galleries are on view. We also expect collectors to the art fair – and it may well also happen that a visitor purchases an artwork, the first piece of a latter collection at ARTplacc. Besides the CET, expect pop-ups of curated exhibitions and public art projects all around the peninsula.

We at ARTplacc believe in the permeability of artistic boundaries, this is why beside the visual art focus, we offer programmes of different genre. This years’ performing art acts contentrate on the relation between theatre and fine art.

After dark, the audience can enjoy international film selections at a lakeshore louge cinema and can get acquainted with the newest local and international video art trends at a former hotel built in 1923.

As the saying goes, a festival is not a festival without a musical profile. The evenings of ARTplacc end near our lakeshore venue by the port where artists, gallerists and the audience socialize and party together with the night lights of Balaton in the background. The music schedule, lined-up for last year provided a broad musical and visual experience with diverse gigs including indie, undergound and lo-fi bands Volkova Sisters, Wattican Punk Ballet and Mayberian Sansklülotts.
